Kerala’s iconic Vallam Kali spirit gets a high-energy competitive twist as Red Bull Vallam Vali introduces a tightly regulated head-to-head format
KERALA: Kerala’s traditional boat-racing heritage is set to take on a new competitive dimension with Red Bull Vallam Vali, a high-intensity sporting format that combines the spirit of Vallam Kali and Vadam Vali.
According to the competition’s official Rules & Regulations, the event will see teams battle head-to-head on the water, with the objective of pulling their opponent’s Vallam across a designated finish marker.
But there is one major twist — each match is capped at 120 seconds.
The competition will feature two categories: Chundan Vallam and Churulan Vallam. A Chundan team can field a maximum of 85 members — comprising 75 oarsmen, nine cheerleaders and one captain. The Churulan category allows 27 members, consisting of 23 oarsmen, three cheerleaders and one captain.
Two minutes to settle the contest
Every match begins only after officials position the Vallams, confirm their alignment and give the official starting signal.
Once the race begins, teams have a maximum of two minutes to force their opponents across the designated finish marker. The official signals come at the 60-second and 90-second marks, before a mandatory STOP announcement at 120 seconds.
If a team successfully pulls its opponent across the finish marker before the two-minute limit, it wins immediately.
If neither team achieves the decisive pull within the allotted time, the result will be determined by position: the Vallam that is farthest from the Centre Line at the moment of the STOP announcement will be declared the winner.
No room for tactical mistakes
The rules place significant emphasis on maintaining position within the designated Race Track.
Teams cannot deliberately cross boundaries, interfere with their opponents or use the sidelines to gain an advantage. A warning may be issued for an infringement, while repeated or deliberate violations can result in disqualification.
Even before the race starts, crews must remain disciplined. Any rowing, pulling or movement intended to gain an advantage before the official signal can result in disqualification.
Every pull counts
The scoring system is straightforward: a match victory earns two points, while the losing team receives none. In the league phase, teams will play three matches before the Finals.
Should teams finish the league stage level on points, the rules provide for the team with the lowest aggregate time taken to secure its winning match or matches to rank higher. If the tie remains, the Organising Committee will determine the applicable tie-break or play-off procedure.
Safety remains paramount
Despite its aggressive competitive format, the regulations place safety at the centre of the event.
If a participant falls from a Vallam, the captain must alert the Race Officials and the race can be stopped or suspended. No team is permitted to continue competing or seek an advantage while a participant is in the water. Officials can restart, reschedule, award, forfeit or abandon a match depending on the circumstances.
The rules also give the Chief Referee and Race Officials broad authority over starts, timing, track infringements, finishing positions, safety decisions, penalties and disqualifications.

The official regulations describe Vallam Vali as a contemporary competition built around Kerala’s traditional Vallam Kali and Vadam Vali heritage, while aiming to showcase the state through culture, adventure, sport and tourism.
With massive crews, a confined race track and just 120 seconds to establish dominance, Red Bull Vallam Vali is shaping up as a contest where power, synchronization, positioning and split-second decisions could determine victory.
For the crews on the water, two minutes may be all it takes to turn tradition into a battle for supremacy.
