The 2026 Asian Games have begun in Aichi-Nagoya, but accommodation arrangements have emerged as an early concern for several participating delegations.
Asian Games 2026: Unlike previous editions, organisers opted against building a traditional athletes’ village. Instead, athletes and officials have been accommodated across hotels, temporary facilities and a cruise ship.
The unconventional arrangement has created difficulties as thousands of athletes arrived in Japan ahead of the competition Asian Games 2026.
Reports indicated that some athletes faced delays in receiving their rooms, while accommodation allocations were also subject to last-minute changes. India’s contingent was among those dealing with accommodation-related concerns, prompting Indian officials to intervene and arrange additional hotel rooms where necessary.
The Indian Sports Ministry also established additional support mechanisms involving Indian officials, the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Embassy to assist athletes and officials with accommodation and other logistical issues.
The decision to use existing infrastructure was intended to reduce construction costs and avoid creating a large athletes’ village that could become underutilised after the Games.
However, the scale of the Asian Games has made the alternative model challenging to manage.
With more than 11,000 athletes participating across 43 sports, organisers now face the task of ensuring that accommodation arrangements remain stable throughout the competition.
For athletes preparing for major events, reliable accommodation is an essential part of maintaining training, recovery and competition routines.
As the sporting programme progresses, organisers will hope that the initial accommodation problems are resolved quickly and that attention can return to the performances on the field of play.
