CHENNAI: Actor and professional racer Ajith Kumar has welcomed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s announcement of a dedicated Motor Sports City in the state, describing the initiative as a major step forward for Indian motorsport.
CM Vijay announced the proposed Motor Sports City in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on September 3. The project is aimed at strengthening motorsport infrastructure, encouraging young people to take up the sport and creating opportunities to identify and develop racing talent.
The proposed facility is expected to include infrastructure for motorsport training and international-level racing. Reports indicate that the planned circuit could be capable of hosting Formula racing categories, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4.
Reacting to the announcement, Ajith thanked the Tamil Nadu government for giving greater attention to different sporting disciplines, including motorsport.
“Having currently being involved in motorsports, I would like to rephrase a quote by astronaut Mr Neil Armstrong,” Ajith said, before adding:
“One small step by the Tamil Nadu Government, one giant leap for Indian motorsports!”
Ajith also praised the government’s efforts to encourage youngsters towards sport, identify talent and provide opportunities to develop athletes systematically. He wished Chief Minister Vijay and the Tamil Nadu government success with the new sporting initiatives.
Tamil Nadu’s motorsport ambitions
The proposed Motor Sports City is part of a wider sports infrastructure push by the Tamil Nadu government. The project is expected to support motorsport training while also contributing to sports tourism and the state’s wider automotive and motorsport ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu already has an established motorsport culture, with the Madras International Circuit near Chennai serving as one of the country’s major racing venues.
For Ajith, the announcement has particular significance. The actor has competed in international motorsport and is currently involved in racing through Ajith Kumar Racing. His team has competed in international endurance events, adding further weight to his support for developing motorsport infrastructure in the state.
The Motor Sports City remains a proposed project, and no Formula 1 Grand Prix in Chennai has been officially confirmed. However, if developed as planned, the facility could provide Tamil Nadu with a dedicated platform to nurture young racers and strengthen India’s presence in international motorsport.
